Rowena comes to us from Claremont, California, with a long history service and dedication to social justice issues affecting underserved communities. Prior to medical school, she was a 5th grade science teacher in inner-city Oakland for several years. She worked with the AMA to author a resolution to oppose the “Public Charge” rule, co-founding Project H.A.P.P.Y., an after-school obesity and diabetes prevention program, and has studied the development of a needle exchange program. She was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Rowena is excited about joining the UM/Jackson med-peds program to work with the local community and developing her own skill set to become a true physician leader and advocate to mitigate health disparities.
