Toby was born in Englewood, New Jersey and received a BA in Classical studies from Duke University and his MD from University of Virginia School of Medicine. His experiences working with the incarcerated population, disadvantaged K-12 students, and community members in developing nations have helped him explore the humanity of people from different backgrounds than himself and promoted his desire to be an advocate for them through medicine. In medical school, he was part of the Generalist Scholar Primary Care Leadership program and student Charlottesville free clinic allowing him to explore issues of access, inequality, and health outcomes. His involvement led to his induction in the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

He was drawn to Jackson due to the commitment of both the health system and the passionate people of the Med-Peds program to care for the vulnerable in their community. It didn't hurt that the people in the program were tons of fun. He plans on using his skills as a med-peds physician to work on health policy to continue to tackle health care disparities in medicine and feels like Jackson is the right home to train to do that best.

In his free time, you can find him playing basketball, paying attention to anything sports, watching movies, finding new places to eat in Miami, or hanging with his faith community.
