Urban Health Track

CLINICAL CURRICULUM:

Created in 2017, the Urban Health Track is a two-year track designed to develop leaders in primary care and urban/underserved care for South Florida. This is a primary care oriented curriculum, designed during elective time during PGY-3 and PGY-4 years to provide dedicated training experiences in psychiatry, HIV primary care, women’s health, dermatology, and musculoskeletal examination/procedures. Additional experiences include rotations at Planned Parenthood and Miami Rescue Mission.

The Urban Health curriculum is designed to start during your PGY-3 year. It is open to all Med-Peds residents who are interested along with Internal Medicine residents.

COMMUNITY ADVOCACY:

In addition to the required clinical rotations listed above, UHT residents volunteer longitudinally at the IDEA Exchange - a free clinic that provides sterile syringes, basic wound care, overdose prevention, and referrals to HIV treatment services with the intention to reduce HIV, HCV, and other blood-borne illnesses in the community. Every UHT resident completes the Buprenorphine X waiver training so that he/she/they are able to prescribe Bupe and/or Suboxone at the needle exchange during their final year of residency.

EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM:

Our UHT residents are responsible for creating and delivering content during the Internal Medicine ambulatory academic half-days. Under the guidance of Subhashree Nayak, our track taught our IM and Med-Peds colleagues about LGBTQ+ Health in Primary Care in the spring of 2021. Our UHT residents are preparing to educate their peers about substance abuse and addiction medicine this coming spring (2022).

UHT residents also participate in quarterly resident-driven journal clubs. Open to all Internal Medicine and Med-Peds residents, our UHT residents lead robust discussions on topics such as gender-affirming care, medication-assisted treatment referral programs, and exploring housing status and income as predictors in the COVID-19 pandemic.

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY:

All urban health track residents are required to participate in scholarly activity and must complete at least one scholarly activity project in order to successfully complete the track.
